Keyword Research 101

Keyword research is really a simple concept to get a grasp on, there are search engines and there are people using search engines to find information. The way people find what they are looking for is by keying in phrases at the search engines.

The people you want to attract to your website are the people that are going to:

1. Like what you have to say and opt-in to your newsletter so that you can sell them stuff in the future
2. Buy your product or service right now

Think about this for a moment. What are you selling and how are people searching for it? Start your keyword research with that in mind and you will be getting ready to target the right keywords.

I have met far too many people that were instructed to blindly create a keyword list with little to no thought about what the potential visitor might be looking for.

When researching keywords the best question to ask yourself when making an initial determination of whether or not to target the phrase for natural search or to launch a paid search campaign is this:

"Is that keyword phrase likely a buyer or a browser?"

If you think the search phrase is likely a buyer then you want to create copy to promote your products via that search phrase.

If you feel it's a browser keyword, what I mean by a browser keyword is somebody simply looking for information and is not likely going to buy from you right now, then I suggest you still create copy to get natural search engine rankings to help build your brand awareness and to also capture their name and email address in your autoresponder.

When you are performing your keyword research and trying to distinguish whether or not a phrase is likely a buyer here is an example of a buyer and non-buyer phrase

Buyer keyword phrase: order pet supplies online
Browser (non-buyer) keyword phrase: pictures of cute pets

Don't get too bogged down and if you are in doubt try buying some paid search traffic from Google and allow 300 to 400 clicks run and then check your sales conversion rates to see if you have buyers or browsers.

Why StomperNet SMARTS Doors Closed

I just received an email from Andy Jenkins stating that they closed the doors early on the SMARTS course.

It seems that SMARTS is engaged in a scarcity tactic on the fly because Sribd.com has stopped allowing link to be placed in articles submitted to their resource.

This is one of the most difficult things with ANY product launch is the ever-changing landscape of the internet. One day there's a resource such as Scribd.com that allows you to add links to your site and then BLAMO, mid-launch the rules get changed.

So Scribd.com is not allowing links in articles…

So What! Do not panic, you can still use Scribd to gain valuable exposure for your website.

It appears that from the nature of what Andy’s email was saying is that they are teaching you how to build links to your website using Web2.0 resources such as Scribd.com to build link popularity.

If that’s the case what they are teaching is very very very short term.

Anytime it is incredibly easy to self-manipulate link popularity, it is paramount that you know that Google will clobber the effectiveness of links that are easily added by yourself.

I have been using Web2.0 entities not to build inbound links to my website. I have been using entities such as Scribd.com to get readership. The best thing you can do is forget about self-manipulated link popularity and use sites like Scribd to build YOUR brand.

How do you build your brand using the social media?

Images – use logos and images that will catch the attention of people viewing your submissions on the social media.
Provide incredible content – educate, entertain or create controversy using web2 media.

That’s it! Use Web2.0 to get known. Get to know the intimate details of your industry and be an authority. To be an authority means you know more than most people do.

Here’s an example of how Web2.0 exposure has worked for my financial affiliate website, Crediteria.com, got MAJOR national coverage using Web2.0.

I was watching my local news and saw an incident of identity theft occur at a shopping mall located very close to my home.

Since I have a financial site and get tons of visitors on money and credit related terms I thought I should add a category about identity theft prevention on my site.

Within 4 days I had several pages about identity theft on http://www.crediteria.com.

Next I used the social media to advertise the fact that I had information about identity theft.

Yes, I did add links to my site via the social media but my intent is not to boost link popularity, my intent was to drive authoritive visitors to my site that could write about my site.

What happened?

A site owned by AOL, BloggingStocks.com, linked to Crediteria articles citing it as an authority on identity theft prevention
Alfred McComber from a nationally syndicated radio show based out of Washington DC called me to appear on the “Code Red” Radio Show as an identity theft expert guest.

Did you know that getting traditional media coverage leads to more inbound links and links that are naturally cast because a blogger or webmaster heard you speak as an authoritive figure?

OK, not everybody can get radio coverage, but everybody has a telephone and can call authoritive sources in their industry to ask for advice about content on their site and while on the call, why not ask for a link as a valuable resource. Yeah, I have successfully built inbound links that way too.

The point here, if an inbound link is incredibly easy to acquire then Google will likely diminish the value of that link by next week.

Do stuff to build your brand today.

As I enjoyed the life of freedom that my internet marketing business gives me this week-end.

I watched Team Canada win gold at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Yeah baby! The Canadian Junior hockey team just pulled of a 4peat, a quad-peat..OK…we still have to name what just happened but winning back to back to back to back golds is unheard of in any sport!

Great job boys! The entire country of Canada is proud of you for showing the world that Canada IS hockey!

After watching the Canadians kick the United States in the butt to go face the Swedes in the Gold medal game, I then enjoy the wildcard NFL week-end only to cap things off with playing some hockey myself. I am proud to say that I scored with only 3 seconds left in the second period.

Getting back to this internet marketing thing, there's tons of offers flying at you every day, but which is the best internet marketing training program out there?

Yesterday I signed up for Ty Coughlin's Reverse Funnel System which is currently promoting great travel product.
The cool thing about the funnel is that it's a unique marketing layer that can sit on top of almost any product.
